How to Choose the Right Bucket Teeth for Your Excavator

When it comes to heavy equipment performance, few components have as much impact as your bucket teeth. The right tooth profile matched to your ground conditions can mean the difference between a productive shift and costly downtime.

Understanding Tooth Profiles

General Purpose (GP) teeth are the workhorses of the industry. Designed with a moderate taper and balanced point geometry, they handle mixed soil conditions (clay, loam, and light rock) with reliable penetration. If you only stock one type, GP is the safe bet.

Rock Chisel (RC) teeth feature a narrower, reinforced tip designed to concentrate force on a smaller surface area. They excel in fractured rock, shale, and hardpan. The trade-off is faster point wear in abrasive sand or gravel.

Tiger Long (TL) teeth offer extended reach with aggressive self-sharpening geometry. Popular on Doosan and Komatsu machines working in quarries, they maintain penetration as they wear down.

Matching Teeth to Conditions

ConditionRecommended ProfileWhy
Clay & loamGPBroad tip moves material efficiently
Fractured rockRCConcentrated force splits rock
Abrasive sand/gravelGP or Heavy DutyResists abrasion wear
Hard limestoneRC or Twin PickMaximum penetration force
Mixed/unknownGPBest all-around versatility

The Adapter Factor

Your adapter must match your tooth series exactly. A J350 tooth on a J450 adapter creates a loose fit that accelerates pin wear and can cause tooth loss mid-cycle. We see this mistake frequently; always verify your adapter series before ordering replacement teeth.

Our Recommendation

For most Canadian operations dealing with varied soil conditions, we recommend starting with GP teeth and keeping a set of RC teeth on hand for rock encounters. This dual-stock approach covers 90% of job site scenarios.
